California text tax rejected

State regulators say a new Federal Communications Commission ruling is preventing them from imposing a tax on text plans.

Regulators were scheduled to vote on the measure on January 10.

However, the FCC issued a new rule on December 12, stating that text messages are an “information service.”

The state hoped to add new monthly fees to wireless customers bills to increase funds for programs that bring connectivity to under-served residents.
