Local bike group holds 30th “Toy Run”
The Harley Owners Group, or HOG and the Salvation Army teamed up for the 30th anniversary “Toy Run”.
Early this morning, members of HOG gathered at the Harley Davidson store on Fortuna Road to donate toys for kids in need.
Later in the afternoon, the bikers mounted their motorcycles, escorted by Yuma Police Department, for a parade around town.
Reynold Jerome, director of the local HOG chapter, said it is important for the community to think about families in need around the holiday season.
“We have to give to the kids, we want to bring them Christmas, we want to bring smiles to their face,” he said.
The event will be happening until 3:00 including a tri-tip lunch with raffles and prizes.
Captain Jeffrey Breazeale with the Salvation Army said he always looks forward to working with the Yuma chapter of HOG for this event.
Breazeale said because of toy drives like these around the holidays, the Salvation Army is able to collect an average of 1,500 and 2,000 toys.
“We are supporting 600 families this year and about 1,800 children here in Yuma,” he said.
In each family, a minimum of three toys is donated to each child.
Qualified families are based on their need and financial situation.
The community is encouraged to bring a toy to donate.
If you missed the event but would still like to contribute, toys can be dropped off at the Salvation Army office.
