DHS Secretary speaks about the bomb scares and migrant caravan
Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen inspected the completion of the Calexico area border wall.
She shared that 11 more miles of border barrier work on the east side of Calexico is planned for next year.
One of the concerns tied to the border is the approaching migrant caravan from the south.
“Everything is on the table. We are working through that and discussing what that would mean in terms of implications operationally,” Nielsen said.
She confirmed the military might get involved to help in border security.
“We have asked for engineering support, logistic support. It would include vehicle barriers, pedestrian barriers,” Nielsen said.
She didn’t give troop numbers or date of arrival.
“We fully intend to continue to tell those who come here that if you do not have a legal right to enter the united states, you will not be allowed in,”Nielsen said.
The secretary also spoke on the investigation of suspicious packages believed to be bombs sent to various leading people is a national priority.
“I condemn these cowardly acts in the strongest possible terms. Americans will not tolerate these types of threats and we will not be intimidated by attempts at acts of intimidation,” Nielsen said.
DHS will update the public regularly.
“And we will continue to work closely with the FBI and our federal partners to bring this person or persons to justice and to keep our country safe,” Nielsen said.
On Friday, a suspect in the suspicious packages investigation was arrested and charged.
