Student of undocumented immigrant denied education
A San Luis High School sophomore was withdrawn school Tuesday after her mother failed to provide a state-issued identification to prove her residency.
Stephanie Lara’s mother, Griselda, explained that at the beginning of the school year, the school administration asked her to provide an Arizona-issued ID. But because of her undocumented status, she couldn’t provide proper documentation.
“Because I don’t have papers, because I don’t have documentation from the United States, the school told me how can an illegal person enroll their child without any papers,” said Griselda .
News 11 spoke with the Yuma Union School District to learn more on why the district demands a state-issued ID.
“It’s a state law that in order to receive a public education in the state of Arizona, you have to be a resident of Arizona regardless of your citizenship,” said Eric Patten, with the Yuma Union School District.
Lara attended her final day of classes Tuesday and even said that she and her family were escorted off of campus by the school’s security guard.
