Guatemalan detainee gives birth in Yuma

(Editors Note) In a previous version of this story we said the Guatemalan national gave birth at a CBP processing center. That was a mistake on our end. The woman gave birth at Yuma Regional Medical Center.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said a Guatemalan pregnant national gave birth in Yuma on Sunday night.

CBP said Border Patrol agents were approached by a Guatemalan national detainee who said she was pregnant and felt sick. Agents transported the woman to Yuma Regional Medical Center for further medical treatment.

The Guatemalan woman gave birth to a healthy boy Monday morning. Officials said that the child is a U.S. citizen by law since he was born on U.S. soil.

According to CBP, the Guatemalan woman is just one of more than 1,900 Guatemalan nationals apprehended by Yuma Sector Border Patrol since October 1, 2018.
