What you need to know about the 2018 general election

Though it may seem the primary election just passed, it is time to begin thinking about the general election come November.

The general election is just around the corner on November 6, 2018.

The general election is the election where voters determine who is elected into office, which statewide propositions become law and which judges and justices will remain.

Voting in this election is just as important because it allows voters to determine which candidate they want to represent them.

Statewide offices have a term of four years so the selected candidate will remain in office until 2022.

Candidates for the legislative office have a term of two years which means they will remain in office until 2020.

There are several important dates and candidate information to remember for this upcoming election.

In Arizona, October 9 is the voter registration deadline and early voting begins as soon as October 10.

The last day to request a ballot by mail is October 26 and you must mail in your early ballot by October 31.

The last day to vote early in person is November 2 at the County Recorder’s office on South Main Street.

There are several key candidates running for various positions in the general election.

The candidates for U.S. Senator are Republican nominee Martha McSally, Democratic nominee Kyrsten Sinema and write-in Green Party nominee Angela Green.

McSally has been representing Arizona’s Second Congressional District in the House of Representatives.

McSally says she is “running for the united states to fight the fights that must be won on national security, economic security and border security.”

Sinema is currently the U.S. Representative from Arizona’s 9th congressional district, first elected in 2012.

According to Sinema’s bio, “Our nation is facing a lot of problems right now, but we can fix these problems if we work together.”

Green’s candidate information she says that “We need to have quality in housing employment and most of all healthcare.”

Running for Governer, is Republican incumbent Doug Ducey, Democratic candidate David Garcia and Green Party candidate Angel Torres.

Ducey was sworn in as current governor of Arizona in 2015 and is up for re-election.

Ducey’s statement says he intends to ensure “A secure economy. Secure schools. A secure border and safer neighborhoods.”

Garcia is a professor in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University and he says he has “committed his career to improving public schools.”

Torres has served as the state chairperson of the Arizona Green Party since 2004.

Torres says the theme of his campaign is “freedom and grassroots democracy for all Arizonans.”
