Elementary school cross guard recognized for going above and beyond

Adam Conn, a Heber Elementary School cross guard, was honored Wednesday by Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia for going beyond the call of duty.

This summer, Conn purchased ice cold water and handed it out to students who would walk home during the hot days.

When Assemblymember Garcia heard that story, he was inspired by it and created a state resolution that would recognize all cross guards who provide public safety for students.

“It means what I’m doing actually matters. You know more than that…you know they’re doing ok so that’s what matters to me,” said Conn.

One school official said Conn provides the assurance for students that they’re in a safe environment.

Heber Elementary School District Superintendent, Juan Cruz said, “We want our schools to be a place where students feel nurtured and cared for. And if our students see…that’s the first person that they see and that welcomes them and that they know is caring for them, it just makes that student walk in through that fence knowing this is a place that truly cares about me.”

Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia said individuals like Conn should be recognized for making a difference in the lives of students.

“We were able to introduce a resolution at the state legislative level. That would recognize all of our volunteers statewide . And there are thousands and thousands of men and women who volunteer at our schools to make sure that our students cross those streets safely,” said Garcia.

Conn hopes to set an example for students. “I hope that they pass on whatever I give to them. You know it’s like if I give them a good experience maybe they can pass it on to their folks, people around them,” said Conn.

Because Conn took it upon himself to give water to students on scorching hot days, the school district now provides the water for students as they leave school.
