Teen hospitalized after ingesting unknown prescription drugs

One student was taken into custody after allegedly passing out prescription drugs to students at San Pasqual High School Monday.

Kelly Hammond of Winterhaven said her nephew and son were offered unknown prescription drugs while walking to school Monday morning. According to the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office, the drugs affected eight students who were all hospitalized after ingesting the drugs. The teen whose identity is confidential said he felt dizzy after taking two pills before noon.

“I couldn’t walk straight and they were small and had a small line in the middle.”

Once Kelly was notified by the school, she said she feared there would be several children dead.

“When we got to him he was ‘out of it’ -kind of like he was drunk. We were told it was Xanax and the [student] who was giving them out didn’t even know what it was.”

As of now, there is no confirmation if the ‘dealer’ is a student or a former student, but we’re told by parents this has happened before.

“I don’t know the policy, but I think they need to make a new policy,” said Kelly. “If a child is caught doing something that can severely harm or cause the death of another student, they need to be removed completely from the campus or isolated so they can be monitored. I do think it could happen again and it will happen again.”

We are currently waiting for a response from the San Pasqual High School Superintendent for an update about the students affected and the substance identification from the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office. We will keep you updated with more developments and confirmations in this investigation.
