YUHSD adds new community service incentive for annual Food Bowl

The sixth annual Yuma Union High School District Food Bowl is in full swing and will go through October 19.

For the past five years, YUHSD has partnered with the community to collect non-perishable food items to donate.

Students are able to bring in things such as canned goods and rice or beans the week leading up to the Friday football game.

Members of the community who attend the game are also encouraged to bring food items.

The newest addition to this year’s competition: students at the five YUHSD participating schools will have a chance to earn additional points for serving at one of the pre-chosen non-profit organizations.

For every hour the student volunteers, “three pounds” of food will be added to the school’s total.

Among these non-profit organizations are Boys and Girls Club, Sunrise Rotary, The Humane Society of Yuma, Children’s Museum, Habitat for Humanity and Crossroads Mission.

Each campus will hold one “Food Bowl” game in addition to San Luis’ annual “Sugar Bowl” flag football game.

All food donated will be weighed then given to Crossroads Mission at the end of the competition.

Eric Patten, communications director for YUHSD recommends only bringing food items and bring all other donations directly to Crossroads.

On October 23, the winner will receive a trophy during a celebration at “Da Boyz” I talian restaurant.

Over the past five years, a total of 30,000 lbs have been raised for donation.
