Cibola Library wins the Dollar General Literacy Grant

The Cibola High School library was named a recipient of the Dollar General Literacy Grant with a grant that provides up to $1,500 for new books.

The funds will be used to update the library’s collection of non-fiction, Spanish language books, fiction and graphic novels. According to Cibola librarian Amanda Coltman, the idea is to engage students and encourage a lifelong love of reading, no matter what the student’s interests may be.

“Students at Cibola love to read and have a variety of interests,” Coltman said. “The library always tries to reinforce those interests by finding books that are relevant and updated with popular topics, genres, and formats. By doing this student literacy and reading comprehension can be increased. I would like to thank Dollar General for awarding us this grant.”

Seven schools in Arizona were awarded the grant this year and Cibola is the only school in Yuma County and the only high school in the state to receive grant funds.

According to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s website, the foundation has awarded more than $159 million in grants to nonprofit organizations and schools in 43 states that have helped more than 10 million individuals learn to read, prepare for high school equivalency tests, or learn the English language.

Applications for next year’s grant will be available in January 2019 .
