Agents rescue injured teen abandoned by smuggler

Border Patrol agents rescued an injured 17-year-old girl who was left behind by a smuggler east of Calexico late Thursday night.

At about 10 p.m., agents noticed two individuals walking north near Anza and Bowker Road. Agents encountered the pair who were determined to be Mexican citizens illegally present in the United States.

The pair told the agents they illegally jumped over the wall with another person who was left behind because she was hurt and could not continue. Agents followed the footprints behind south towards the border wall. Near the wall, agents found a young woman face down in the dirt with a lower leg fracture.

Agents trained as emergency medical technicians responded and treated the woman who showed signs of fatigue, heat exhaustion, active bleeding, and a fracture to the lower left leg.

Medical personnel treated the woman who was transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
