Wild coyote attacks Mexicali family

A family in Mexicali was attacked by a coyote last month after they kept the wild animal as a pet.

Authorities are now warning the community about having wild animals as pets. Although the coyote bite incident was not fatal, officials say wild animals may contain diseases different from domestic animals.

It is recommended not to keep them even though they seem harmless as puppies, said the Head of the Jurisdiction of Health Services of Mexicali, Yoloxóchitl Gómez.

Many people have found it easy to find these puppies outside and take them to their homes. But as they grow up they can pose a great risk because they tend to attack due to their wild animal instinct.

It is not the first time that wild animals are found in homes in Mexicali. These animals have been confiscated due to security reasons by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA).

At the Mexicali Zoo, there is a great variety of animals confiscated from homes by PROFEPA such as owls, tigers, and lions. It has become very common to find them in people’s homes, said Jose Luis García Chavira, director of the Mexicali Zoo.

A tiger was confiscated in January and a lion last August. Authorities are asking the community to bring these animals directly to the zoo if they are found because they are dangerous.
