Local school district warns of scammer calls

The Gadsden Elementary School District is warning of scammer calls after a local parent received a call from someone posing as their daughter claiming she was abducted.

At around 10 a.m. Thursday, a parent received an anonymous call from someone posing as her daughter. The district said the daughter was attending the district’s summer school at the time. The parent was then told her daughter had been abducted.

After immediately reaching out to the school, the parent was reassured by a teacher that her daughter was safe and in class.

The district is informing the community that scammers may pose as relatives or friends, calling or sending messages. If someone calls or sends a message claiming to be a family member, the district advises to do the following:

Resist the urge to act immediately, no matter how dramatic the story is Verify the person’s identity by asking questions that a stranger could not possibly answer Call a telephone number for your family member or friend that you know to be genuine The district administration encourages anyone with any information regarding telephone scams to please call the San Luis Police Department at (928) 341-2420 or the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office (928) 783-4427 and report to Gadsden District Office.
