Imperial animal control use of social media leads to decline in lost pets

Efforts made through social media by Imperial’s animal control, has led to a decline in lost animals. When a stray animal is found, their photos are posted on the animal control’s facebook page and community members are quick to share and respond.

“We’ve noticed a great increase in reuniting pets lost in our city with their owners with that. With the assistance of social media,” said Alexis Chalupnik, Public Information Officer.

This helps the Imperial County Humane Society, who just doesn’t have the room to take in so many lost pets. Devon Apodaca, Executive Director of Imperial County Humane Society said, “They’ve been able to help reunite a lot of their…the stray pets that they pick up up with their families. Which helps us out. Because that keeps animals out of the shelter. More animals are going home.”

Apodaca says, an easy way for owners to find their lost pets is to get them microchipped. “It’s a very quick and easy and safe way to reunite lost pets with their families. Also it’s another way to prove ownership of the animal.”

City officials say, residents should also take precautions so their pets don’t get out from their home.
Chalupnik said, “Secure your yard. Look for ways to get out. A scared animal is a curious animal. They’ll find ways to burrow, climb over. “

The city hopes that residents will continue to report lost or stray animals so that they can be taken to safe environments and reunited with their families.
