Are there migrant children being held in Yuma?
Here locally we wanted to check to see what’s happening with migrant children who may have crossed and been processed in our region. Unfortunately the number of migrant kids in our area was not confirmed, but we do know that Yuma’s border patrol station off of Ave A in Yuma is a “holding facility” for migrant men and woman and their children. It’s a temporary place for them to be held until the immigration customs enforcement task force takes over.
Border patrol agent Jose Garibay explains,
“Due to the large and varying influx of individuals that cross in Yuma sector, we do not have a typical “Holding time”. However, unaccompanied alien children and family units are given priority.”
Update: A federal judge has turned down a department of justice request for more time. U-S district judge Dana Sabraw called the deadlines “Firm” not “Aspirational goals.”
According to the administration, as of late Tuesday afternoon, four children of 102 identified for the deadline had already been reunified with their parents and another 34 were expected to be reunited by the end of the day.
