Crane School District’s, “Summer Food Program”
While we often think of summertime vacation as a nice break, a lot of kids in Yuma county worry about where they will get their next meal. We spoke with the director of nutrition at Crane School District to get information on a summer food program starting June 4th. This program has been going on for years, but this is the first summer that Crane School District is offering five different location for kids 18 and under.
The district’s nutrition department will start serving meals through a federally funded program administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The only process one must take in order to get a free meal is to just show up. Breakfast and lunch will be served Monday through Friday starting June 4th through July 27th with the exception of the July 4th. That means kids will be able to eat two free meals a day, 5 days a week. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 am to 9 am and then lunch will be served from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm with a variety of healthy choices kids can choose from.
“One misconception that a lot of people have is that they can only visit the schools that are close to their house and that’s just not the case. We want people to know that any location that is open for summer meals, they are welcome to visit. Whether it’s a district one school, whether it’s a high school or if it’s here at crane, we would love for you to come and visit us wherever you are,” said Michael Clark, Director of Nutrition for Crane School District.
Another great aspect to the program is it’s partnership with the Yuma County Public Health Services. They are providing nutritional learning for the kids along with some physical activity once the children are done eating.
