Calexico school employees threaten to go on strike
The California School Employee Association in Calexico said they’re frustrated with the school district over their contract and are ready to do something about it.
CSEA President Sonia Redona said, “It’s very frustrating. As you can see some of the members are here tired just like the negotiators sitting there on the table and we cannot get anywhere. We’re here to show the board members that we’re united and we want our contract finalized by the end of may.”
The association numbers over 400 locally, providing supportive services.
“Which are cafeteria, they’re campus security, secretaries, groundsmen, nurses, you name it,” Redona said.
They complained the board has spent thousands of dollars in legal fees – money they could have used to help school kids or otherwise.
“Even though we started negotiations back in February of 2016, the district has paid this lawyer just to negotiate with us so far $74,000,” Redona said.
Redona said they’re tired of waiting and they want action now – or they walk.
“It’s very frustrating. They’re upset. They want to do a walkout. So, the message to the board right now, get the lawyer to negotiate on Tuesday,” Redona said.
