Border agents arrest naturalized citizen for smuggling heroin

Border Patrol agents arrested a naturalized citizen, originally born in Mexico, at the Interstate-8 Immigration Checkpoint for attempting to smuggle heroin on Tuesday.

Wellton Station agents sent a gold Chrysler PT Cruiser to secondary inspection around 11:40 a.m., after a K-9 alerted agents. During a search, agents discovered a fake battery in the engine compartment with nearly eight pounds of heroin in three separate packages inside.

The narcotics are worth more than $134,000.

Agents identified the suspect as a 60-year-old man residing from Somerton, Arizona.

The heroin was seized and the subject was arrested.
