Bailing out moms for Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is this Sunday, and many families have brunch or lunch plans. But some moms are separated from their children because they are in jail and unable to pay bail.

One Kalamazoo, Mich. woman is working to change that.

Community organizer Elisheva Johnson calls the bond system a debtor’s prison.

“A lot of times, when you’re locked up, it really exacerbates the issues that you face already in poverty,” she said.

Johnson says most people who are locked up are in jail because they haven’t paid some sort of ticket, not because they are being held on more serious charges.

“Lots of times people lose their jobs, they lose their housing, just because they’re locked up on what we call crimes of poverty,” she explained.

A national movement gave Johnson an idea.
