Safety first

SCAG, the southern California association of governments, wants to reduce the number of road fatalities and injuries as well as decrease the amount of air pollution in the Imperial County.

Close to 800 people in the Imperial County were injured on the road last year alone. The Go Human campaign hopes to change that statistic.

“And we’re really focused on driving down those numbers. To make the driving experience, and walking and bicycling experience safer for the entire southern California region,” said David Salgado, SCAG Regional Affairs Officer.

El Centro is one of the many cities taking the initiative for in making roads safer for their residents.

Abraham Campos, the interim public works director said, “we’ve added bike lanes, we’ve added cross walks, with bobiles that reduce crossing times. And rapid flashing beacons to make pedestrians crossing more visible to motorist.”

Not only will the campaign save lives but better the environment as well. Salgado says,”you know, through encouraging biking and walking can definitely hopefully, push people to choose that option more. Versus a vehicle or even transit. As a different way to get around Imperial County.”
