Educators will continue fight in November after governor signs education bill
A sense of gratitude and accomplishment took over the streets of Yuma as educators thanked the community for their endless support.
“Today the signature of the bill just represents our first step,” said local educator Ana Ortega.
Educators hope this is the first step in the right direction. According to Arizona governor Doug Ducey, the state budget plan includes not only teacher pay raises but also about 100 million dollars for support staff and ‘additional school needs.’
Some teachers remain hopeful as they chanted “the fight is not over, the seed has just been planted.”
While others are a bit skeptical.
Tallada Johnson, a Gila Ridge High School teacher said, “The emotions are mixed, but all I can say is we can’t just stop fighting today. We can’t just go back to class and forget about everything. We need to make sure we are informing everyone. Everyone needs to go look at the conversation that was had and go to the voting booths in November and make the right choices.”
She is not the only educator who feels this way.
Joe Daily, a teacher, and representative for the Yuma Union High School District and District One said the next step is to educate the community on the bill the governor signed along with encouraging people to vote for pro-public education politicians this fall.
