Yuma teachers lead walk in day before statewide strike

As the state of Arizona gears up for a historical walkout, teachers across Yuma County lead one last walk in Wednesday before the strike.

The ‘Red for Ed’ movement took off weeks ago and has propelled the state to protest legislators, demanding a 20 percent raise in teacher salary.

Jessica Rahkola, a Fourth Avenue Middle School teacher said she hopes the Yuma community will unite in support for teachers Thursday.

“I encourage them to wear red, to bring signs,” Rahkola said. “[I encourage them] to walk with us [and] support us, like we support them and their families.”

Teachers in Yuma will begin their demonstration at 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

Moreover, march organizers said hundreds are expected to participate in the historic movement.
