Two local AZDPS troopers receive Department’s Life Saving Award

Two Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers received the AZDPS Life Saving Award for their fast response and efforts to help save a man.

Trooper Ryan Hofer and Trooper Joshua McDonnell are both from District Four, which covers the Yuma County area. They arrived to an incident where a man had gotten both of his legs caught in a hay press, and his legs were nearly severed at the knees. Both troopers used their quick thinking and remained calm while under pressure while they applied a total of three tourniquets to compress the limb and try and stop the bleeding. The man was airlifted to St. Joseph Hospital in Phoenix. A nurse at the hospital said, “If the tourniquets had not been applied, the man would have bled out and died.” The man went into surgery with the tourniquets still on. AZDPS said he will have to lose both of his legs, but thanks to the quick response and tremendous efforts by the troopers, the man’s life was saved.
