Grand Opening of Candyland

The famous game that we all played as children is now a real life park in Yuma. This morning, one of Yuma oldest parks got a makeover, a Candy Land makeover that is.

The Joe Henry Optimist center park located in the Mesa Heights neighborhood of Yuma has been transformed into the life-size version of the classic board game. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place just after 10 am this morning. Kids and parents were out and about till noon enjoying all the amenities offered. From dart throwing to face painting to ice cream and hot dogs everyone was out in the sun enjoying the new theme to this park.

“This is so great, you know to see these kids out here playing the Candy Land game. This is something new and unique and has never happened before. I saw a child today and I was holding up the Candy Land game and he said, ‘I have this board game at my house and I get to play it now outside,’ ” said Debbie Wendt, parks and rec director.

The grand opening event also offered free children’s health screenings and a chance to win an abundance of items from a bicycle to free swim passes to the community pool this summer.
