Couple Suspected of Smuggling Meth, Fentanyl Into Arizona

Border Patrol agents say a couple was arrested on suspicion of trying to smuggle drugs from California into Arizona.

Agents in the Yuma Sector from the Blythe, California station conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 40 around 1:15 a.m. Wednesday near Topock.

They searched an Acura TSX and found 32 pounds of methamphetamine and 5,000 tablets of fentanyl in a speaker box inside the trunk. The drugs in total are estimated to be worth nearly $200,000.

The 23-year-old male driver and a 22-year-old female passenger were taken into custody.

Agents, who did not release the suspects’ names, say they are both U.S. citizens and were traveling from Los Angeles to Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office seized the drugs and the vehicle.
