8 years since Easter earthquake

It’s been eight years since the city of Calexico felt the aftermath of a 7.2 magnitude earth quake from it’s sister city of Mexicali. Many properties were damaged. Damages the city still feels today.

Maritza Hurtado, the mayor of Calexico said, “we had a lot of damage and we’re still to this day having to repair many of those damages. Not just to the businesses, to the homes. But to the overall economy of this border city that had to survive something so devastating like that.”

Hurtado says, the city worked on being prepared for when disaster could strike again. She said that the important thing, “is remembering what happened to us. Cause the reminisce of the memories are there. But more so to be prepared for the next if that were to be happening and to rebuild. Learn how to better rebuild and stay together as a community.

The mayor believes it’s important to maintain hope and never forget what happened that day. “The earth quake of 2010 happened to all of us together. So I know that this community is surviving together. And we’ll always maintaining the hope I think is the most important for us.”

Buildings and streets were damaged. But the foundation of the city cannot be broken as they continue to rebuild and heal.
