April is ‘Distracted Driving Awareness Month’

A new report from AT&T shows 9 in 10 people will admit to using their smartphone while driving behind the wheel.

The month of April is Distracted Driving Awareness month and ‘The It Can Wait’ campaign is using new research to avoid accidents from happening worldwide. The state of Arizona currently has no statewide ban on distracted driving, with nearly a quarter of people not considering driving and using a smartphone is a ‘major problem’.

Yuma Police Department tells us it’s not only distracted driving which can get you cited or cause an accident, but also waiting at the stop lights when you think it’s okay to take your hands off the wheel.

‘It’s not okay because that’s where a lot of rear accidents that happen because you’re distracted on the phone,’ said Sergeant Lori Franklin.

YPD also says that distracted driving is a big problem all year round and is more common with teenagers on the road. If you really need to send a quick text or make a phone call, the best way Is to pull over to a safe location and proceed when you have both hands on the wheel to avoid any future accidents.
