Man arrested for allegedly killing puppy after it peed on carpet

A man was arrested this month after allegedly shooting his nine-week-old puppy for urinating on his carpet, the Imperial Police Department said.

31-year-old Johnathan Torres was arrested and charged with animal cruelty on March 17th. Police recovered a Smith and Wesson firearm at Torres’ home.

Authorities said neighbors reported hearing yelling coming from Torres’ home, then four shots after that. Torres’ killed his puppy Clark in a backyard after the puppy had urinated, police said.

Torres was the assistant manager for El Centro Tractor Supply at the time. The store has puppy adoption events regularly. The store said Torres no longer works there.

An Imperial resident said she’s outraged and wants Torres prosecuted.

“I’m upset because it’s disgusting what happened and it’s sad. And there was no need for it to happen. He should pay for what he’s done. There should be justice for this puppy and he needs to be prosecuted and convicted,” said Shanda Arreola, an Imperial resident.

Torres is out on bail.
