Former YPD officer reschedules preliminary hearing amid rape allegations

A former Yuma police officer could face up to 16 years in prison for allegedly raping an intoxicated woman in San Diego, Calif.

In November of 2017, former officer Jared Elkins was charged with eight felonies of crime, including forcible rape.

His original preliminary date was set to be March 22nd but was rescheduled for Thursday, March 29th at 8: 30 a.m.

He asked for a continuation date to his case Thursday morning. His new preliminary date is set for April 19th.

Elkins was arrested back in September of 2017 when the victim’s mother called San Diego Police Department and claimed that her daughter was raped by Elkins in the neighborhood of Kensington.

Upon arrival, authorities found the victim was visibly intoxicated. Court documents indicate Elkins should have known she was unable to give consent.

There is still no clear information on the relationship between the two.

Elkins was married in 2013 and served as a police officer in Yuma for the last seven years. He was on paid administrative leave after the incident for a couple months.

The former Yuma police officer resigned back in January and will be in court on April 19th.
