Kofa HS hosts ‘The Annual Great Debate’

Local students continue to raise their voice in their Annual Great Debate.

On Wednesday, the Junior State of America club of Kofa High School will host their annual great debate where teachers and students will debate on social and political issues.The purpose of the event is to not only raise funds for local students but to practice public speaking and hearing both sides of to an argument.

“I would just like them to feel empowered and feel like they can make a difference,” said Ketzalli Lopez, a senior at Kofa who will be a moderator for the teacher debate.She said this year will be different adding how past topics have been immigration, education, and even certain amendments to the constitution.

“I would like for them to take away that they can speak their mind, they have a voice, and there are so many different topics and opinions that they haven’t heard of.”

Kofa’s High School JSA Chapter is the largest in Arizona and is also recognized on a national level. The event is a non-partisan debate with the goal to have all ages express their views and opinions in a safe learning environment.

If you are interested in participating or being a spectator, the event begins at 7 p.m. at the Kofa Auditorium with a $5 dollar donation at the door.
