Week of the young child

In tonights Making a Difference, we are focusing on an event called, “Week of the young child.”

It’s an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Up to 20 agencies will come together and bring different types of resources to Yuma families. Resources such as hands on activities to help with motor skills, reading sessions to help with literacy and music and food to encourage healthy eating and community involvement. This is all meant to prepare our kids for a future in education.

Nena Garcia, the community outreach coordinator with first things first explains why an event like this is making a difference.

“It’s critical for the young children population because 90 percent of their brain develops by age 5. So they have to be ready for when they come to kindergarten and it’s critical that they receive this,” said Garcia.

This event has been going on for 41 years and here locally it has taken place on the Heritage library lawn for almost 30 years. The ‘week of the young child’ takes on Saturday, April 14th from 9 to 12pm. Contact Ana Bribiesca at ana.bribiesca@cplc.org for more details.
