Fatal crash under investigation

The Yuma County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a single vehicle rollover in the area of South Somerton Avenue and West County 8th Street at approximately 6:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The driver has been identified as 19-year-old Maryah Gonzalez.

Gonzalez was traveling northbound on Somerton Avenue approaching County 8th street and failed to negotiate the curve and ran off the left side of the road.

The vehicle struck a small embankment, which caused the vehicle to roll and come to rest on its roof.

Gonzalez sustained a fatal injury and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

This case is pending further investigation. Alcohol appears to be a contributing factor.
