Roommate of murder suspect gets emotional inside courtroom
The roommate of a man accused of murder becomes emotional inside a courtroom after he’s asked to relive a crime scene on Friday.
The suspect, Francisco Hernandez-Serrano, is accused of murder following the death of Emmanuel Alvarenga-Navarrete on January 20, 2016.
According to the defense, his testimony didn’t align with the interview he initially had with a case detective in 2016.
The prosecutor questioned him over the narrative changes Friday morning.
The witness said he was scared and emotional at the time of the detective’s interview.
Moreover, he said he was overcome with emotion inside the courtroom because he never thought his friends would “do something like this.”
“I was their friend,” said the witness. “And I never believed they would do this.”
Friday was the third day the witness took the stand.
He said he didn’t remember what he told the case detective back in 2016. However, he said he remembers exactly what he say that day.
The witness said he told the detective he was scared of the two suspects involved, Serrano and Jose Alfredo-Sorto, answering why he was afraid to tell the truth during his first interview.
Moreover, he said he heard shots fired January 20 and walked up to the victim on the ground and both suspects present.
He said the victim was still breathing and moving at the time he was loaded by Serrano and Sorto into his own trunk.
According to the witness, Sorto pointed a gun at the witness and asked him to assist him in placing the body inside the trunk.
However, the witness said Serrano was never threatened by Sorto and voluntarily assisted.
Sorto allegedly shot the victim in 2016.
He is currently facing a 22-year prison sentence. The defense argues Serrano is only a witness of the crime, not an accomplice.
The trial will resume Tuesday.
