City of Calexico begins border mural renovation
Starting this week, the city of Calexico began renovation to the border mural which stretches two miles long. The mural was created in the early 1990’s thanks to the city, Calexico Art Commission, school districts and community.
“That part of our fence, here in Calexico is a very old part of the fence, that does need to be replaced. It appears that this has been in the works since 1999 where Border Patrol has been requesting that, that part of the fence be replaced with a more practical type of fence , which is fence that would be more close to what we have in downtown Calexico.”
The new mural will be part of the city’s replacement program and will renew the symbolic meaning of friendship between Calexico and their sister city of Mexicali, the GSA and the Border Patrol.
With the help of the Calexico Art Commission, a section of the mural that was replaced will be installed at Rockwood Plaza Park, where it will be preserved and protected.
Modernizing this section of the border fence allows the city to keep a piece of their proud history.
