GRHS boys soccer takes on top seed in state semifinals
The Gila Ridge High School boys soccer team is one game away from a shot at the AIA 4A Conference championship, according to Yuma Union High School District.
The No. 5 Hawks take on No. 1 Tempe at 5 p.m. on Wednesday at Williams Field High School in Gilbert. After two thrilling, one-goal victories, Gila Ridge is poised to advance to their first championship game in boys soccer after coming up short in the semifinals in 2016-17.
“We are sitting in very familiar territory at this point in the season,” Gila Ridge head coach Corey Semler said. “Last year, we controlled the match and were simply unlucky. We hit the post four times. I don’t think we have managed to do that all season this year. Moving forward, our team is much more mature. We have battled back in each game this postseason. Having the composure to stick with the system in times of adversity is what makes us a threat going forward.”
Gila Ridge’s system includes the state’s top goal scorer and assist leader, Esteban Franco, who has recorded 37 goals and 25 assists through 18 matches.
“Esteban’s skill set is diverse because he can outmaneuver opponents with his skill moves on the ball and blow past them using his combination of speed and agility,” said Semler, who is in his third season as the varsity head coach. “What makes him even more dangerous than his attacking traits is his mindset of always looking to set up his teammates. Esteban’s play-making ability is under-valued due to his goal-scoring prowess.”
Franco, though, has had plenty of help. Sophomore forward Evis Fierro is second on the team in goals and is known for his creativity and awareness; senior midfielder Ian Meza is the team’s captain and emotional leader; and senior centerback Erick Beltran is the defensive leader and, according to Semler, “always seems to be in the right position at the perfect time.”
Meza and Franco were around a year ago when the Hawks were in a near identical position, facing No. 1 Coronado in the semifinals and lost, 1-0. On Wednesday , they have a second chance at their first title.
