Teenage driver hits ag pump; taken to hospital

First responders rushed a teenage driver to the hospital after she struck a farm sprinkler irrigation pump.

The Somerton Cocopah Fire Department said they got the call Wednesday at 7:17 p.m. in the area of Avenue G and County 14½.

Upon their arrival, SCFD personnel said they found a Ford pickup truck with one occupant that had struck a farm sprinkler irrigation pump. The pickup truck sustained significant damage to the driver side quarter panel.

The driver of the pickup truck was a 17-year-old girl, who stated that she was driving northbound, towards Yuma, when another vehicle veered into her lane causing her to swerve. When she swerved, her pickup truck hit the shoulder and was pulled off the roadway and into the sprinkler irrigation pump.

The driver complained of loss of consciousness and pain to her right arm. Somerton Cocopah Fire Department personnel placed her into full cervical spine precautions and onto a backboard. The patient was then taken to YRMC by a San Luis Fire Department Ambulance for further observation.
