Two-vehicle collision on Highway 95

The Somerton Cocopah Fire Department responded to a collision involving two vehicles on Highway 95 at around 2:27 p.m. Thursday.

According to an eyewitness, a white full-sized Chevrolet was traveling northbound on Highway 95, crossing over the center turn lane and into southbound traffic.

A southbound gray Volkswagen sedan with four passengers was unable to avoid the pickup truck due to heavy traffic on the southbound lanes and was struck by the pickup truck.

The vehicles struck front passenger side to front passenger side, trapping the front passenger of the Volkswagen.

Officials estimate that the vehicles were traveling at around 50 mph.

The gray Volkswagen’s passengers were an older couple with their son and granddaughter. All four occupants of the Volkswagen suffered minor burn injuries to their shoulders and necks from their seatbelts in the accident.

The driver of the white pickup truck, who was also using his seat belt, refused treatment and transportation.

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate the passenger of the gray Volkswagen. This passenger also suffered an injury to one of his knees from the impact.

The San Luis Fire Department sent two ambulances to assist and all four patients were transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center for further evaluation.
