San Luis Police Department warns community of scam calls
The San Luis Police Department is warning the community about scam phone calls with six cases reported throughout the month of October.
A San Luis resident reported a caller had identified herself as an APS representative informed her that she needed to pay $1,360 or her electricity service would be suspended.
The caller also told her that there was a crew heading to her home to cancel her electricity service unless she bought two “Green Dot/Money Pak cards” (pre-paid cards) with the $1,360.00.
After contacting APS, the resident was told no one had contacted her from APS about any outstanding bills. The number that appeared on the caller ID had a prefix of 333-XXX-XXXX.
IRS scams have also been reported where supposedly an IRS agent was requesting payment for overdue taxes. If the money wasn’t paid through prepaid cards or wire transfers, victims were told they would be arrested.
SLPD is asking the community to not share any personal information if they suspect the call to be suspicious.
It is also asked that citizens make every effort possible to contact family members first to know their whereabouts before wiring and sending money out.
