Two arrested after fleeing from Border Patrol agents

Two Tucson area residents were arrested Monday morning after fleeing from Border Patrol agents who attempted to pull them over near Hereford, Ariz.

The incident happened near the San Pedro River crossing on State Route 92 where agents encountered a Ford Explorer after a citizen reported a suspicious vehicle. When agents attempted to stop the vehicle, the vehicle sped away down a rural road.

Border Patrol agents followed the vehicle until the driver, in an attempt to evade arrest, drove off-road through a barbwire fence into a field where the vehicle became stuck in a ditch. Agents arrested both occupants and found marijuana bundles in the vehicle.

Agents seized the vehicle and transported the suspects and 91 pounds of marijuana.

The occupants, both U.S. citizens, are being held on federal drug smuggling charges and are awaiting a disposition.
