Car lands into canal

Two people are alive after their car landed in a canal Wednesday afternoon.

At 12:24 p.m. the Somerton Cocopah Fire Department said it responded to a vehicle in a canal at County 15 th Street and Avenue C.

A dark brown midsized sedan was travelling southbound on Avenue C, and the driver failed to turn, skidding out of control and flipping upside down into the canal which runs parallel to County 15 th Street.

Upon the arrival of Somerton Cocopah Fire Department personnel, they found that both occupants had managed to push a door open, take themselves out of the car and climb out of the canal.

Both of the car’s occupants had been wearing seatbelts. They both complained of neck pain and the female passenger was transported to YRMC, while the male driver refused treatment and transportation. Yuma County Water Users was advised of the vehicle in the canal and had their personnel respond to the scene.
