Border town cancels Mexican festivity to help earthquake victims

The Mexican Independence Day celebration in Calexico known as “El Grito” is cancelled.

The Mexican Consulate in Calexico said they are focusing on helping the victims of Tuesday’s 7.1 earthquake that’s killed 250 and injured thousands in Mexico. Deputy Consul Hector Huerta Nava said survivors are being pulled from the rubble daily. He said they’re working with two local organizations to collect supplies which will be sent to Mexico the following week. People can donate at Calexico’s Neighborhood House, 506 4 th Street, and at Campesinos Unidos, 1005 C Street in Brawley.
