Doctor discusses upcoming flu season; Suggests vaccination

Health experts have found multiple reports of the flu virus across the state of Arizona. However, critics question the severity of its threat.

Dr. Adil Baig with the Yuma Regional Medical Center said the particular diagnosis of the virus varies throughout certain regions.

Moreover, he said the city of Yuma has instead seen a trend of respiratory issues instead of the flu virus.

“What we’re seeing in Yuma right now is more of the upper respiratory infections,” Dr. Baig said. “Not necessarily the flu just yet.”

However, Dr. Baig said he advises patients to consider the flu shot within the next several months – He said flu season has a tendency of picking up throughout the winter season.

“Going by the guidelines,” Dr. Baig said. “Anywhere from October to the end of March and April is the high peak of flu season.”

While reports steadily show an increase in the virus throughout the state of Arizona, it hasn’t hit the city of Yuma yet.

However, Dr. Baig suggests patients still take all preventative actions.

“Hand washing if you’re feeling ill, avoid public places,” Dr. Baig said. “Gyms [as well.]”
