It’s been more than a half century since President Lyndon Johnson signed Medicare into law ensuring that Americans age sixty five and older are insured. Now U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders wants to expand the program to include all Americans. During a press conference on Wednesday afternoon Senator Sanders pitched his bill to the country.
Sander’s “Medicare for All” promises to follow the success of Medicare and according to the senator Americans will pay a fraction of what is currently being paid to private insurance companies. Sanders boasted that the new program would even expand to include dental, hearing and vision. In true Bernie Sanders fashion the politician placed blamed for inflated cost on the pharmaceutical companies and the medical industry who according to the senator spend billions in lobbyist and campaign contributions to move legislation in their favor.
The bill will face heavy opposition as many see universal healthcare as a step towards socialism and creating a single-payer system would dramatically affect the medical industry decreasing profits.
