Topic of the Day: Remembering September 11, 2001

13 On Your Side wants to know your thoughts:

September 11, 2001, is remembered by most as the day Americans saw the true face of terrorism. Those that were near ground zero remember the day as starting off like any other, described as a perfectly clear Tuesday morning. But, in an intense everything changed as a ball of fire was seen coming out of the side of one of the World Trade Center Towers; moments later cameras captured a second jet crashing into the second tower.

As the entire world watched emergency crews responded to the scene knowing that the buildings could come down at any moment. Americans watched as the two towers collapsed, a cloud of debris spread throughout the city and ignited building around them. Soon word that a third jet had been hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon our nations headquarters for the U.S. Department of Defense.

Later, we learned details of United Flight 93 which was also hijacked; but, passengers took it upon themselves to thwart the hijackers plans and the plane was forced to crash into an empty field. United 93’s intended target was never released, but many feel they could have been targeting the White House. Sixteen years later the wound is still fresh as we remember the almost 3,000 people killed and more than 6,000 injured on that fateful day.

Among those lost were hundreds of firefighters who sacrificed themselves to save others along with several police officers. On this day, we remember those lost and thank those that still answer the call to help.
