Community prep students for solar eclipse

The community of Yuma is preparing for the Total Solar Eclipse for Monday August 21st .

The Yuma Main Library will be hosting a free viewing eclipse party which is open to the public. They’ll be handing out free eclipse glasses to attendees, first come first serve.

Sarah Wisdom, the community relations manager for the Yuma County Library District shares with us some of the features they’ll be offering. “We have a solar telescope and we have several telescopes that have been fitted with special filters so people can view the sun safely .”

Some of the local schools in Yuma such as Valley Horizon Elementary School, Pueblo Elementary School, and Gowan Science Academy had an agenda of learning about the fundamentals of the eclipse and on safety viewing. The classes also participated in creating viewing models as an alternative to eclipse glasses.

One local student at Pueblo Elementary shares his thoughts. “I’m excited because this is the first one I’ve seen in my whole life and I’ve been waiting my whole life for this.”
