Topic of the Day: American Heritage or Symbols of Hate
13 On Your Side wants to know your thoughts:
Up until a few months ago, discussions about Civil War statues and monuments were isolated to communities in the south and the eastern United States. But, many feel that the racially motivated shooting of nine people at a Charleston, South Carolina church pushed the issue into the lime light. And now, the entire country is voicing their opinion; many feel that those relics from the past are priceless and are part of our heritage, while others argue that they promote division and racism.
Across the country communities are opting to remove monuments remembering the men and women who served in the Confederacy. In one case a group of men and women were arrested after vandalizing a statue outside of a North Carolina courthouse. Across the eastern seaboard cities like Baltimore, Gainesville and Tampa are removing Confederate statues. On the west coast California is working with the Daughters of the Confederacy to relocate statues; in Arizona Governor Ducey announced he will not make a decision on the state’s monuments, but will leave it to Arizonans to decide.

Should we take down all Confederate monuments?
