Local fire station makes temporary move
Fire Station One in Calexico has moved temporarily. The move comes after the building was deemed outdated and not compliant because of minor health risks.
Firefighters will still be using a portion of the old station, but their living quarters have been moved to 415. E. 4th St. This location will be used for the time being, which is the old court building just behind Fire Station One.
News 11 spoke to fire officials on Monday to see how long the move will last.
“Some of the old drywall, some of the old lumber in that area, due to getting wet and stuff, just years of accumulation of dust,” said Wally Castro, Captain at Calexico Fire Department.
“We’re still using the app floor in the front where all the units are running out of, so that might mislead people as to think that we’re still in that building, but we’re running out the back. Were still you the app floor basically because we need to have all our units underneath the shade for our medications and stuff,” added Castro.
No word yet on when the renovations will begin or how long it will last, but a proposal has been put into the 2017 capital improvement plan in hopes of moving the project along.
In the meantime, Fire Station One does have a temporary phone number where they can be reached until all old lines have been switched over.
In the meantime, you can reach the Calexico Fire Department at (760) 768-8393.
