Yuma Mayor proclaims August ‘Drowning Impact Awareness Month’
Yuma Mayor Doug Nicholls proclaimed August “Drowning Impact Awareness Month” in hopes of tackling the number of drownings that happen every year.
Every year in Arizona dozens of people drown. This year there has been 32 drownings in Phoenix alone. Eight of those resulted in death. In Yuma there has been at least one drowning and several other water-related incidents this summer alone.
Children four years old and younger are in the highest risk group. Mayor Nicholls says he’s seen this tragic incident affect a family close to him and wants to prevent other families from experiencing that pain.
In California and Arizona, drowning is the leading cause of accidental death to children under the age of five.
