Ways to stay safe and prevent wildfires
This time of the year is common for hot temperatures, humidity, and at times — winds. It’s also the season for wildfires. These weather conditions allows for wildfires to grow bigger and spread farther.
The Goodwin Fire in Prescott is a testament to that. The fire is forcing thousands of residents to evacuate as it burns through acres in the valley.
Since the area isn’t heavily covered in vegetation, Yuman residents don’t have to worry about large wildfires. However, fire officials want to stress that preventing fires is easier and safer than putting it out.
Fire officials want you to keep in mind some tips when dealing with fires:
– Use extreme care in the use of all fire (campfires, grills)
– Extinguish and safely handle all smoking materials, including fireworks and cigarettes
– Use spark arrestors in mechanical equipment, such as off-road vehicles — do NOT park in grassy areas
– Wear non-flammable clothing and don’t wear loose clothing near fires
– Have a nearby water source (bucket of water or fire extinguisher)
