Property tax proposal not sitting well in Wellton
The Town of Wellton is proposing a new property tax.
A special election will be held on May 16, 2017 for proposition 410.
The polling place is located at First Southern Baptist Church, located at 11711 William Street in Wellton. It will be open from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
According to Town Administrators:
“Prop 410 is being submitted for your consideration for the establishment of a primary (ad valorem) property tax for the Town. The Town of Wellton currently does not have a primary property tax levy. There have been historical short falls in the annual budget of the Town of Wellton approximating $300,000 per year. In addition to the shortfall the Town has capital and equipment needs that are currently unmet, including a building to house the new fire tender truck and replacement of aging police vehicles.”
If passed, the proposition will generate approximately $400,000, according to Town Clerk Larry Killman.
The funds would go towards the fire and police departments, public works, and to the state’s retirement system.
A special meeting will be held at Wellton Elementary School Gym, located at 29126 San Jose Avenue, on Tuesday, April 25 at 6:00 p.m. The public is welcome to attend, learn more about the proposition and voice their concerns.
